Tenuta Il Poggione is known for its rich, dense Brunello wines balancing ripe fruit, savoury elements and a classic structure, considered to be some of the greatest wines produced in Italy. These wines reward the patient drinkers and evolve significantly with at least a decade in bottle.
The estate covers 530 hectares (13000 acres), with 140ha (336 acres) planted to vines and 50ha (124 acres) to olive trees. The remainder is dedicated to cereals, livestock and forestry. The estate was founded in the late 19th Century by Lavinio Franceschi, a landowner on the hills above Florence, who bought land and began planting Sangiovese vineyards and introducing modern farming methods. Il Poggione remains in the same family. Today it is owned by Lavinio's descendents, Leopoldo and Livia.
“With an intoxicating perfume of rose petals, wet earth and forest floor jumping out of the glass, you know this is a classy and charming Brunello. The palate is intense and long-lasting, unfolding layers of sour red cherry, hawthorn, potpourri and sweet spice. The fine-grained tannins are masculine and well-structured. Aged in French oak barrels for four years, it is already a fine treat but can still evolve further in bottle.” [Decanter]
